Hard start, then rough idle. Next time starts right up.

Sometimes the car (1989 Turbo)will not start and then when it does a small amount of smoke comes out of the tail pipe, and I get a high idle (1,100 - 1,200 rpm). Parked the car overnight and the next day started right up with no smoke and smooth idle. Seems to happen when I drive short distance and park the car for 10-15 minutes and then try to restart.
I have all new vacume lines, dist cap and rotor, plugs, plug wires, fuel filter.
When it will not start I can smell gas like it is flooded. I think it must have something to do with the car not getting spark.
Thanks in adv. for any ideas
Gary
