Lots of folks here suggest getting the brake bands (inside the auto tranny) adjusted. I haven't had it done, but the idea is simple. There are three gears inside the tranny, and they are 'engaged' by a metal band clamping down on the outside, like a huge, vacuum operated hose clamp.

Loose bands = slipping in gear (+ heat buildup = burned fluid)

Broken band(s) = no motion in that gear.

Type F fluid doesn't have the slippery additives in it like others, hence the recommendation to only use Type F. Folks seem to like Amsoil; I'm a fan of Red Line synthetics (Red Line Racing ATF is correct for Saab).

I'm told that the Saab (Borg Warner) auto is one of the few autos that CAN be adjusted, and so should be. Others (BMW, for example) are SOL if it starts to slip. Also have them check the kick-down cable if your auto 'bucks' during shifting.
