1. How is the factory unit removed? Any special tools required... etc...

Yup, you need the u clips to pull the head unit out of the dash. If you don't have them, you should be able to bend a wire hanger in the proper shape to insert into the holes. Slide the tool or the hangar into the holes and you'll (by feel) figure out how to get it to slide out.

Once it's out, you'll be a bit surprised that there's still a cage in there! You need to bend the front and bottom of the metal cage inward to be able to pull it out. The wires are connected to the back of the cage. Disconnect the harness.

2. Are there any wires that I should not run to the cd unit that are known to blow fuses or cause any other problems?

If you are supremely lucky, you'll find a wiring harness adapter, but I doubt you will. As long as you don't let the exposed ends of the power wires or the ground wire touch anything, nothing bad will happen with any of the wires (this is after you cut off or splice into the wires).

3. I assume the wires run directly into the factory unit meaning I will have to splice a harness onto the car to mate up with the new receiver...right?

See above. You'll probably just have to hard wire the existing wires to the new stereo's wires. No big deal, use connectors that your local radio shop recommends (like bullet type connectors).

4. Any quirks or difficulties i should be aware of?

Not really, it's pretty simple, but if you can, I'd move the stereo down to the lower console as it's cooler there and then you can use the upper slot for either a ford cupholder/coin tray or aux. guages.

Have fun. It's a pretty easy task.
