The windows should go down when you push on the front of the switches. From your description, it sounds like the driver's side is backwards. Regardless, the plugs can only go into the switches one way and it is unlikely that the contacts were switched around in the plugs. I forget if there is a double plug connector for both switches or two singles. If it's a double, you won't be able to just flip a switch and it's plug around. Check that approach out. If there is a plug for each switch, you can flip the switch.
The other thing that might have happened is that the wiring was switched around in the door or in the harness that can be accessed under the hood just ahead of the door pillars. Any recent work done there? Without looking at a wiring diagram, I am guessing that you could either pull the door panel and switch the connectors right at the motor or in the harness ahead of the door pillar. Might be three or four wires, one or two ground and one up and one down? A meter can tell you what's up.
