it's also possible that your pre-pump has failed. I'm trying to differentiate between the two options now. Mine starts sputtering when the gauge touches the red just before the fuel light comes on (about 350 mi into a tank-87 900S). It runs fine on a full tank. I've now run three containers of isopropanal based dry-gas through it so I'll be wathing as I approach the bottom of the tank again. At a 1/4 tank, though, your symptoms are more likely a bad pre-pump, particularly if you see things like stalling on hard braking or cornering. If your fuel pump has been worked on, it's also possible that the return line isn't dumping into the little can that the pump sits in.
