My wife had driven her '84 turbo about three miles this morning when suddenly there was a kind of grinding or crunching sound and the car wouldn't move. It appeared to me that the brake lights were stuck on, so I went about to find a problem with the brakes. I loosened the lines at the master cylinder to see if it was functioning. When she pushed the pedal, there was plenty of pressure. Then I bled the system, and had no trouble restoring a nice firm feel to the brake pedal.
Then I jacked up the left front wheel, chucked the back tires, put the transmission in neutral, released the hand brake, and tried to turn the wheel. It would turn maybe an inch each way. I repeated that process on the right side, with the same result. The rear wheels turned freely.
So now I'm thinking the deal with the brake lights was a red herring, and the real problem might be in the drive train somewhere. Any wisdom?
