Evan,
In my 10 years in a Saab service center I can't remember seeing a leaking freeze plug.
There is a problem with late classic 900 models.
The late ones got the special long life coolant installed at the factory, pink in color.
That stuff reacts corrosively with normal green coolant.
I have seen blocks and heads with deep large pits eaten away between block and head.
There is a factory bullitin concerning a repair with JB weld, but I don't think much of this practice.
I suspect to see much more of these circumstances as people have not changed their coolant on a regular basis and added regular green coolant to the original pink stuff.
The factory now suggusts use of Mercedes Benz factory type coolant after repairs.
You need the head pulled and then the head and block examined and repair made.
Hope you have little damage.
Please be careful to pick a repair station with a high level of Saab experance and clean repair pratices.
A shitty shop means a shitty repair for the cost of a good repair.
Best of Luck,
Fred R.
