Good oil guage, bad driver.

I mount the thing so I could better determine a problem in advance of rear trouble, then I don't pay attention to the evidence. For about a week I had been smelling burning oil. At the same time I found and fixed a boost pressure leak on the turbo outlet to IC pipe rubber coupling. I thought the sheen of oil along the front of the engine was related to the common-for-SAAB turbo's oily air being forced out of that seam in the coupling. So while the boost pressure loss problem was fixed, the oil smell remained, and while driving the other day I noticed the oil pressure guage was reading lower than normal for that driving speed. "Nah, there's no problem. Maybe the guage connection has weakened." But then it rained here and that's when I noticed a small river of oil flowing atop the wet sloped pavement where I park. Popped the hood and saw the front of the engine covered in oil. I checked the oil dipstick and was astonished to see I was well over two quarts low. But where was the leak? All connections were sound. I thought perhaps one of the engine block seals had ruptured. Or the turbo unit cracked. So I cleaned up the area and started the engine to see if I could detect the leak at a sitting idle. It didn't take long to see - one of the custom turbo oil cooler rubber lines that runs over the top of the radiator to where the cooler is located in front had a small slit. Oil was oozling out like Jed Clampett's Tennessee oil well. So, lesson learned - pay attention to the oil guage.
