Pull out head- open radio case. There is locking level you will need to move- then pry tape and brackets up and out to retrieve. Leave in locked up position.
I wish I could explain in more detail which level locks the tape and bracket down, but its been a few years. I figured it out by trial and error- attempted to pry, felt resistance and with a close eye on the moving parts- narrowed down the culprit lever. I call it a lever, but it was more like a metal arm with a spring (which led to a small accuator motor- one of many).
opening the case is not rocket science, but be CAREFUL when removing face- disconnect electronic ribbons from the main circuit board.
Best of luck- and yes, a new head/CD is the true fix, and you will be so much more happy!
