Pursang didn't go far enough. When the rubber degrades, the two halves of the pulley separate. If they separate a little, one side will back into the oil pump cover and start cutting though it. Very bad. If the whole thing lets go at once, you won't be driving any belts - alternator, water pump, power steering. The car will be dead on the side of the road.
For the labor involved, if it looks in any way tired now, replace it. Try the sponsors on this BB - I've had good luck with Sobstory, but call around. There are no refurbished ones that I know of. Buy new - buy it mail order, but buy new. I'd avoid a junkyard one - again, you may save a couple of bucks, but it's not a job you want to do twice, and a failure is pretty big.
