It's probably one of the worst transmissions I've ever seen in terms of longevity and even worse in terms of gear selection. My 81 280ZX turbo would do 0-60 in 6.2 seconds or so...and felt like it!! Top end was roughly 140mph at 6700 rpm. This with a single overhead cam six cylinder pulling a (they lied, I'll admit!) net 180 hp.
So now we have a Saab with what, some of them pull 185 hp, they have two cams and four valves per cylinder, and usually top out rev limited at 120mph. Pardon me if I hmmph. (And my 87 IS an automatic...my mother in law drives it most of the time, complete with 18psi boost, rrpfr, oversize injectors, AID pressure retard, yada yada yada).
If you want the trans to last as long as it will, change the fluid every 20K and use a synthetic; I've used amsoil ATF and next change will go to AMSOIL Type F. Other than that, you pays your money and takes your chances...including having the tangs break off the torque converter (an inexcusable factory design defect that IMHO should have resulted in wholesale recall and replacement of every torque converter with that defective design and/or an unlimited transmission replacement warranty for that particular failure mode!).
