holding valve to heatercore pipes changed in 88-89 from 4mm Allen to T25 torx. What you need is a 1/4" flex driver (looks like a screwdriver but with flexible shaft and a 1/4" socket adapter in the end) and then you need either a 4mm Allen socket with balltip ( makes it possible to reach a bolt from an angle) or a T25 torx socket.
You get to the bolts from down at pedal area.
When valve is loose you grab it through the speaker hole pull gently backwards and when it comes loose from firewall you turn it approx 90 degrees counterclockwise and take it up through the hole.
Installing the new is just opposite, BUT be careful not to disturb the two o-rings wiggling the valve into place.
I use a silicone grease to lubricate the two plastic pipes so they slide easy through the rubbergrommet, and a sticky permatex glue for the two o-rings so they don't move around to easy.
Make sure you don't forget to hook up shaft for heater control before you install the four bolts back in place.
And also before I start the work I open the valve and blow compressed air through the upper pipe and all coolant in heatercore comes out into engine compartment where it can be rinsed off.
