I drove an '83 Turbo from 135,000 to 225,000 miles. If I had known about saabnet at the time, I might still be driving that car.

This site is probably the greatest single resource you can have- just start asking questions. There are a whole lot of people here who really know their stuff. Of course, you should not take any one person's advice as gospel. Over time, you will start to recognize the names of people who are particularly helpful, as well as those folks who are not.

The '83 Turbos had the 8-valve engine with APC (automatic performance control). Things to watch out for: Overheating is very, very bad. Don't let your temperature gauge even touch the red zone. I found out the hard way soon after purchasing my '83T that the cylinder head was cracked. Very expensive, but once it was fixed it stayed fixed. The starter motors wear out every 150,000 miles or so. Kind of a nuisance. Transmissions are also a weak point. Be gentle with the shifter, and try to shift smoothly. These cars aren't built for off-the-line acceleration- drag racing will greatly reduce the life of your tranny.

You've got a great car. It's fun to drive, safe, roomy, and unique. It can be wonderfully reliable if maintained well. Get yourself some new vacuum hose, and replace all of your existing lines. This will give you some peace of mind, and will pre-empt lots of driveability/idling problems.

Most importantly- buy a service manual from Robert Bentley publishers. It will pay for itself many times over.

Enjoy!
