OK this is kinda bass-ackwards, but I wanted to diagnose an offending noise from one of my c/v's, so I popped off the axle on driver's side, and began to pop in the spare from my junkyard excursion, and much to my dismay I find the desired temp replacement seems to be 1/8th inch or so shorter o/a from mine, wiht same tripods/threads/etc. Can I safely put this puppy in? I scanned some old posts on axle size, seems that besides the tripod size difference only other change was length on old 99's was shorter. But also, I thought those axles were the smaller bearing size also - FINALLY, the whole reason I'm doing this is to trace the offending noise I get even after replacing both axles w/ rebuilds, as well as new wheel bearings and ball joints. The car makes a clunking noise, only on right hand turns w/ acceleration, similar to a bad c/v but different. Only thing I DID'NT do was swap out the inner drivers - and yeas, the pass side driver was obviously worn, but not shot. So I'm back to thinking the c/v's were a bad rebuild, but when I rotate them on a lift/by hand, and inspect them, all are fine.
Maybe the axle should be the slightly shorter unit like my spare? Maybe the inner driver is causing all the racket? Waddya think?
PS answer quick, please - gotta get the kids from school this afternoon! :o)
