I'm doing the same thing you're doing, except I've got an 8 valve. I am getting a header from MSS, and they have them for the 16 valves too. They are a REALLY good place, maybe better than SD. Anyway, I added a K&N and I took off ALL the intake tubing that goes into the airfilter housing, including all that dumb warmup stuff that takes hot air from the exhaust manifold. Then I went to the plumbing section at the hardware store and got a rubber reducer that goes from 4 to 3 inches or something. If you want you can go a step further and run tubing down for a ram air intake, although you will have to worry when it's wet out, which is why I stopped with the reducer. Now the problem is that the inlet is pointing right at the cooling fans. You probably know that the air filter tub is keyed into it's mounting position, so you can't rotate it. All you need to do is take off the bands that go around it, and drill two holes, one on either side of the original one. Then get some long bolts and nuts and put it all back together. With the longer bolts, you can take the tub and position it the way you want to, and the bands will still go around it.
Could you copy my e-mail address, ryaneirich@hotmail.com, so I can here about what you're doing, and how it has worked? I can do the same
