A fine day indeed as I update my stereo while listening to sports on the radio. I plan to upgrade the OEM 10x4's on the back dash. I'm mostly interested in increasing the bass response, but I want to keep the mid-range and tweeter speakers functioning on the 10x4's. So I have a set of 8" round woofers that I will mount alongside the existing speakers, then cut the signal to the 10x4" woofers and send that signal to the 8" set.
This is a totally custom stereo job as I've installed a killer set of 4" round in the front dash, plus a 300 watt amp driven pair of 8" subwoofers enclosed in custom cabinets beneath the rear seat (in the recesses behind where feet are placed). On that topic - here's a tip for increasing bass response in the C900. The more bass vibration you can deliver to the chassis of the car, the more you feel the bass frequencies. A sub-woofer sitting in a box in the trunk just doesn't cut it. That's why I opted for a pair of 8" woofers sitting right behind me. The way they're mounted facing upward, the speaker magnet sits on the chassis floor. The plywood base they are mounted to provides a flat surface across the entire area beneath the rear seat, with perhaps 5" distance from the speaker face to the bottom of the seat. Applying downward pressure against the cabinet face seats the speaker magnets that much more against the chassis floor, thus increasing the "felt" bass response across the entire range. To apply pressure, wood columns of the appropriate length are affixed beneath the seat, which then rest on top of each speaker cabinet when the seat is down. The concept being - if you stand before a bassist while they're playing, you hear the bass signal, sure, but go ahead and sit on or lean against the bass cabinet and you'll feel it in your bones with a clarity unmatched by your ears alone. Nothing beats the sensation of a bass drum kick against the back of your seat while you drive! At the same time, you don't need a costly massive amp system driving huge speakers to get the same effect. Ever hear those cars which vibrate and rattle at a stop light? A lot of wasted wattage and dollars right there.
