Hello Saabers,
I just completed putting a new headgasket and revamped head on my recently "acquired" 1980 8v turbo.
She "runs like a raped ape".
However, my next task is to get the car to go in reverse.
As the legend tells, the girlfriend of the prior owner would
commonly attempt to engage reverse without lifting the
reverse collar on the shifter. He said he was able to fix it but got tired of
dealing with her. (Hence, I got car for free due to thier break-up.)
So lets put it this way, I know reverse works, I just can't reach it.
I know there are a few simple adjustments that can be made.
One adjustment would be stretching or compressing the detent
spring on the other side of the gearbox panel but I don't know if
that is related to my problem or whether to stretch or compress the spring
The tranny only has about 20K on it. All other gears are quiet and work fine.
I just can't seem to engage reverse with the stick. Nothing..
Caveat: This car has a 5 speed tranny with the original 4-speed shifter housing.
Obviously the housing should/will be switched to 5-speed but whether or not
that is my problem is only speculation at this point. Otherwise, I'm having fun fixin'er up.
TIA,
Steve Y
