Was reading a new car guide magazine last night where they rated various cars. The new SAAB models didn't rate very well according to the reviewers (a quirky 6 when it should be at least an 8 out of 10). Who cares what they think, really. But one thing they did note as to why the driving experience wasn't as pleasing as other similarly priced luxury sport sedans was the road/engine/wind noise. A noisy ride.
I personally prefer hearing some engine and road noise, as that helps me monitor what's going on mechanically. A totally noiseless and smooth ride would trouble me. Get a Lincoln Town Car if you want that kind of ride. But if one wanted to quiet the SAAB, especially these older C900 models, there's quite a few things one could do. Behind the dash and around the footwell are areas where additional sound absorbing insulation could be applied. Inside the door panels as well.
When I removed the back dash for a speaker modification yesterday, I had to remove the two side rear (between the rear side and rear windows) window panels. Behind them is nothing but chassis and the exterior body, plus the sunroof drainage tube and rear window defrost wiring. There was plenty of room for additional insulation. I'm guessing the roof of the car also has a similar design where there's room for additional padding of some sort. Perhaps even a foam.
I know from experience that a car without any padding at all is extremely noisy. After I gutted the interior of my old C900 to help rebuild my current car, I drove it to the scrap yard with no dash, no floor carpeting or padding, and no door panels. THAT was one noisy ride! The stock panels and carpeting obviously quiet the car considerably. Adding supplemental insulation would certainly quiet these cars even more.
