Of course it it'll work - there is no reason why it won't. While the AMM is important to *proper* running the car will run without it. '85s and '86s can actually run without an AMM whereas '87s and later *should* go into limp-home mode, which means virtually no power and forget getting rpms over 4000.
Anecdotally, the pre-pump on my '86S decided to crap out on me one day when I was really low on gas, so I pulled the AMM out in order to limp it to a gas station. Wouldn't run with a normal a:f but with the AMM unplugged it was happy to run extra-lean for a mile or so. I wouldn't recommend trying this.
As for Ed's specific question, I had a massive tranny leak up near the clutch one day on my now-sold '88 900T, so I pulled everything off the intake tract, removed the clutch cover, and on the advice from my mechanic started it up to see where the leak was. Besides idling a little roughly, nothing went awry and I spotted the leak. Even was able to feel what kind of air a turbo spits out at idle - quite a lot of flow!
