Howdy.
This has been a good weekend for me and my SPG. The bent 9000 CSE rims that I had bought are now finally on the car (two were bent, so had to get 'em straightened). I had decided a while back that I wanted the carpet in the car to be black and when 85Sled pulled the old grey carpet out of his 2 door LPT, he gave it to me. I went to work on it... I steam cleaned it and then painted/dyed it with many, many coats of black fabric paint. Don't know whether it'll hold up, but it looks great for now. However, installing new carpet is a pretty big deal, so I figured I'd wait to do that.....................
Well, this weekend I went up to Viking Auto, but the whether was crappy and Eric & Jay were slammed, so all we did was put the new rims on. I decided to put a switch in for the passenger front seat heater and pull out the thermostat. Not too bad of a project, but a little unnerving to pull up the leather and cut the section of cloth covering the thermostat. Anyway, that seemed to go okay and I was about to put the seat back in when I noticed just how gross the inside of the car was. Superficially it looked okay, but underneath the seats it was filthy and so I figured, what the heck, I'll replace the carpet. I had my Bentley manual handy so I went at it. I pulled out the driver's seat and the center console and cleaned everything. Once I did that, I repainted the floor underneath of the rear seat. I'm a little type A, but even for a more relaxed person, it was pretty icky under there. Lots of dirt and discoloration. 15 minutes with the shop vac and then I painted it grey and it now looks great! After many hours, I got everything else back together. It took a little longer because I was trying to repaint, tighten down and adjust anything that might need to dealt with in the console. Also, my push button starter had been acting up (or more specifically, not doing anything when pushed), so I pulled that apart and realized that the momentary switch was not working properly, so off to Radio Shack to get some connectors to put in a new one. After all is said and done, I think it looks pretty great inside. Eric's going to put in a new style dash fascia (without the chrome trim) and the inside will look just great. Oh... as I had the door sills out, I repainted them (for the second time). This time I used a grey hammered metal finish paint. They look pretty cool. I went with that because I thought it would be a cool transition between the grey and black doors and the black and grey inside.
A summary of my changes to the inside:
black carpeting
wood shift knob
perfect (new for me) dash
black vinyl door inserts
push button starter
lighted switch for passenger seat heater
grey hammered finish door sills
black rear parcel shelf (black vinyl underneath)
dash mounted Ford cup/coin holder
JVC El Kameleon head unit w/ 12 disc changer
Sony Explode fronts and kenwood rears and two 200 watt amplified subs
Switch for turning on and off sub (where window lock out switch would be)
Switch for raising and lowering the antenna (no need for it to be up when listening to a cd) installed where the rear left power window switch would be in a 4 door
Switch for turning on and off power to the push button starter (so it inadvertent presses to the push button have no effect) installed where the right rear window switch would be in a 4 door.
triple power outlet mounted under stereo in lower console
wired in radar detector
compass
I think thats it for the inside.............
Anyway, car's looking pretty good inside. Outside is pretty good, but a coat of paint would do wonders I'm sure!
Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.
BTW, congratulations Talladega 900 on your new for you SPG! Likewise, congrats WASSAAB on selling the very pretty SPG. Good luck with the WASSAAB car.
