An engine run on non-synthetic oil will have deposits of sludge/varnish.
Synthetic oil will clean these deposits over a period of time. In any engine run over 15,000 miles or so on non-synthetics, I recommend using a good engine flush before going to synthetic. The flush will also clean out the deposits, but faster than the synthetics. As a result, your oil filter is less likely to fill up after a couple thousand miles.
The best flushes I know of are made by AMSOIL and BG. Others on the market aren't as potent. The flush is added to the existing oil (if it hasn't been in there too long), and the engine is fast idled for 25-30 minutes. Then the oil is drained, filter removed, and new stuff put in.
After AMSOIL developed their flush quite a few years back, complaints about excessive oil use dropped by over 75%--
I'd recommend using a flush in your engine, especially since you probably had some antifreeze in the old oil (and that can cause sludging).
Comments based on over 24 years of using and selling AMSOIL.
