Dear Friends,
I bought my first Saab a month
ago. a 91 saab 900s, 16v non-turbo with 200,000 miles. It was love until it blew a head gasket last week. I spent the weekend putting in a new one, and I actually enjoyed working on a car with a little room for my elbows, but she is sorely testing me now: I can't get the timing set up correctly. When I took the head off, the timing mark on the exhaust cam sprocket was dead on (perpendicular to head) with the flywheel at tdc 0 degrees (as per spec); the intake cam was
slightly advanced. With a new gasket, I cannot seem to get either the
exhaust or the intake markers on the cam chain sprockets
dead on perpendicular with the engine at tdc. Everything is hunky dory when I set the sprockets on, but after putting in the chain tensioner and turning the flywheel over twice, the marks shift. Moving the chain one cog on both sprockets in either direction produces a
advance or a
retard of about 10 degrees as measured on the flywheel. The chain does not
seem to be binding, as the engine turns freely with the chain tensioner
installed. The chain tensioner is the new type, and when I first took it out, it had less than 11mm of clearance, so I think that the chain has not stretched out of spec. I had the head resurfaced to remove some pitting at the piston circle of # 2 where the gasket blew, but it was not bowed, and they shaved off a minimum amount : the head shop man said it was within spec. As I said at the top, I've never owned a Saab before, so perhaps I'm missing something, but I could'nt find it in reviewing a year of forum postings. Your advice would be most sincerely appreciated
John
