Fuel pump suddenly quits... not the usual suspects

I drove the usual short distance for lunch then back. Parked at home office and popped hood to check new turbo oil cooler line integrity. Attempted to restart so as guage/adjust idle. Fired up as per usual, then died suddenly. Successive re-attempts result in same thing. I then noticed that the usual sounds of the mod valve and fuel pump during start-up were absent. I've experienced this before - either the pressure switch connection or the fuel pump relay died. I bypassed the pressure switch. Still nothing. Replaced relay with spare (used). Nothing. Two additional relay replacement attempts result in nothing. Then I jumpered the fuel pump relay causing the pump and mod valve to begin operating and was then able to start the car. So I can drive until i figure out exactly what's wrong, I've rigged up a manual switch system in place of the fuel pump relay. Any learned hints as to what the failure cause might be? Car is 82900T w/APC. All connections to starter are sound. Would it happen to be a bad NTC temp sensor or something unobvious like that?
