Five years ago I took an 84 900S as partial trade on an '84 900T I was selling. It was very clean and straight with all original paint and upholstery, and 240K. Reverse gear was all but non-functional and trans had the 'pinion going' whine. I let it sit for quite awhile then decided to revive it - it went to a local indy who does lots of saab trans - it needed a reverse gear and all the basics in the trans,he checked everything out while doing trans and found that although it did not look like it had had frequent oil changes everything was tight and strong. I sold the car to my sister, drove from Portland,OR to Phoenix to deliver- 2 1/2 years later I picked it up in Phoenix and after replacing the fuel pump that failed on my test before leaving town, I drove non-stop back to Portland. [ average 60 MPH and 29 MPG overall with 3-4 hours of sleep in the seat at rest stops. Turned 275K on the way back. ] I sold it to an old friend who drives it daily to work, it looks excellent - better than 90% of c900's you might see. It has given him some cold start problems but just keeps on going. So maybe yours has just gotten broken in. My '84 ran original trans to 240K, and engine is still strong at 280K.
