The time honored method with a stick is get it to the troublesome speed and then "disconnect" the engine & drivetrain. With your auto slushbox can you just pop it in neutral and let engine idle while rolling along at 50mph? Then you know for sure it is from the differential on. I have heard a few theories here about wheel bearings coming in and out with load, even directional changes, but don't have enough experience to comment.
The tire swap front/back is a good idea. Vehicle sound transmitting is quite different from different positions.
Most tire sounds seem to me to be first felt/heard about 30-35mph, normally a second harmonic kicks in again near 60-65. If you jack the front end up and rotate your tires, you can slide your hand along each shoulder while turning the tire with your other hand, slide tire away from your fingertips so you don't stub a finger. If you have a belt separation you will feel a sinusoidal peak/valley in a local area of about 6 inches. These things can make hellacious sounds from the 2 steel belts flexing upon one another over the broken part. General poor ride and some noise.
FWIW I work for one of the major tire companies. Good luck.
