Why ball joints go bad..............It's simple>>> Posted by DougM [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
They layed off the guy at the factory who was supposed to put grease in them.
I just picked up some new ball joints from Jim Moncrief at Sobstory the other day. I pulled off one of the boots and was appalled with how little grease was put into each one. Of course it's not Jim's fault and in no way do I blame him.(he saved me $10 per joint instead of buying from the local parts store)
My solution to the problem was simple. Install grease fittings!!!!!!
I posted a while back and asked if anyone has done this and was surprised that no one had(or if they did, they hadn't replied). It's simple to do and takes a couple of minutes per joint.
Tools needed: drill, #3 drill bit, center punch & hammer, 1/4-28NF tap, grease fittings and grease gun.
Proceed to center punch tit on the bottom of the joint. Drill down approximately 1/4" until you reach a void. Tap hole and install fitting. Pump with grease. The end.
I don't know how long this will prolong the life of the joint, but it has to contribute to its lifetime considering how little grease was present on a new one.
Remember the old days when you took your car in and said "grease job and oil change". Well now you can say it again if you follow this simple procedure.
I imagine you can also do this if the joints are already installed on the car.
Good luck and happy Saabing.
