Yes, your mechanic is up to something. First off, a bad wheel bearing doesn't just happen all of a sudden. More than shaking, you'd start to hear a faint grinding sound, progressing to the point where you have to turn the stereo up all the way to keep from going crazy. And no matter how bad the bearing gets, the wheel will not fall off.
Secondly, as bad as the noise is, you're not likely to feel much shaking. You may feel high frequency vibration, but not shaking.
The best way to check is to jack up the front end and then just turn the wheel in question. If a bearing is going bad, it will make a noticeable sound, not smoot like it should be.
