Big difference between Re-manufactuered and Re-built or Re-conditioned. The Re-manufactured unit will have all the normal wear parts (bearings, rings) replaced. A quality Re-man may be better than new, if they notice a high failure trend, they will often change the design or use a better quality part than new. Change your filter-drier-receiver too. I highly recommend a system flush (you can DIY) and you will void your warrenty if you don't. The R-134A conversion is cheaper than R-12,Is legal to do without a permit, and works even better after a flush instead of what is know as a "dirty" conversion. Figure around $300 for compressor and filter-drier-receiver, And another $100 for O'rings, refridgerant, and flush solvent. The labor depends on if you DIY. You need a vacume pump, service manifold, and flush kit at the minimum.
