Re: CB Radios.. Posted by Randy Thatcher [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: CB Radios.., JustinHiFi ![]() |
I used a CB in my college cars. They are great for road trips for the exact reasons you mentioned: early detection of "smoky bears" and in case you need help. Just leave it tuned to 19 and you're golden. I put 80k on a Dodge Shadow in my last 4 sememsters at school going from Ohio to all points north, south, east, and west. I used to see hardcore, jazz, punk, and ska bands all over the midwest, east coast, and canada. CB was perfect for this amount of driving, and kept it entertaining. FYI, I studied my a$$ off during the week, and tried to keep weekends free. Worked well until last sememster senior year. They had me working all the time. I also had 2 engineering co-op periods in there... I ended up cum laude in Electrical Engineering, so I did study...
As for installation, that's a problem. I wanted to put my small cobra unit in the ashtray area, but it's a bit big. My lower slot is the stereo head unit, and upper slot is a Taurus cup holder. That elimintes IN the dash. CB's typcially come with a mounting bracket that is a metal "U" shaped clip. You can easily remove the CB from this clip. This means you could probably put the CB on the passenger side of the center console. I looked at the driver's side and it's too cramped to have 3 pedals and a CB down there! If you don't have a sunroof try it trucker style and mount it overhead. I don't know what the headliner backboard is. If it's a wood/masonite type of thing you could screw into that. Just don't block the mirror's line of sight!
You have a lot of antenna options... I'd probably get one that looks like a cell antenna and stick it to the hatch glass. No good if you have/want louvers. You could get a temp. one that is magnet mount or clip mount to the rain gutter on the top. Note, those will damage the paint no matter what the package tells you. I've also seen integrated AM/FM/CB antennas, but then your mast would not retract. You'd have a permanent antenna sticking up.
Let us know what you end up doing. If you find a unit that will fit in the ashtray area, let us know. For a nonsmoker, that's the ideal slot. I bet a unit that small would be pretty cheap, too. I guess cheap is relative... Some of the big rig units fetch $200+
Keep on saabin' good buddy
