An unusual tach question...

I have had some curious things happen with my '84 900 S's tach lately. (It is a 3-dr. and 5 speed.) I just purchased this car about one month ago, and have noticed this problem occur 4 or 5 times since then:
When I start the car, the tach needle does not respond (sometimes). A few times, it has "woken up" a bit later, say 2-3 seconds, after startup. I found that if I whack the top of my dash with my palm (I know, I know, my good 'ol boy mentality coming out) it instantly starts working. The problem only occurs at start-up and doesn't happen during driving (i.e. if tach worked at start-up, it will as long I let engine run.)
I am a SAABer that pauses the key 'bout two secs at the "ON" position when I am starting. This lets the fuel pump cycle on briefly to build pressure(never stalls that way). Also, twice now when I turn the key to "ON," the tach has jumped to the redline and back and stayed still until I go ahead and turn key to "START" position.
Has anyone else experienced either of these symptoms? Do I have a bad connection/ground behind my tach? If so, any well-known spot to tighten?
This is baffling me. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
TIA,
Micah in NC
