Firstly, thanks Greg for your comments, and I will have a look myself and suggest that my mechanic considers the 1/2 fork as well (he is knowledgeable but is also pretty open to suggestions).
The symptoms are unique, I think. The car shifts fine into and out of all gears, including third. But if you ease of the accelerator in 3rd it pops out of gear with a very loud bang, although a very light pressure on the stick will keep it in gear. There is also no apparent noise that is usually associated with worn pinion bearings.
Thats why I think the mechanic suggested it was something associated with the synchro having play. If it was a worn fork I think(?) it would have trouble going into 3rd gear (and other gears) in the first place, but then I am not experinenced in the design or repair of gearboxes.
Being the later box I would hate to spend a large amount of money replacing the pinion bearings when they are not very worn, especially as I may have the box rebuilt in the future when/if I install a turbo engine.
If it is a worn 1/2 fork arn't these relatively easiy/cheap to replace??
Justin
