Cheap low end torque boost for 8V-ers

Yesterday while in the boneyard I noticed that the CIS unit on an 86 GOLF was almost exactly the same as the CIS unit on my 88 900 n/a. The only difference I could spot is that the Venturi and airflow plate are twice the size on the VW unit. On a whim I pulled it and brought it home.
As it turns out. It's a perfect fit on the SAAB aircleaner box and all banjo fittings are the same except for the fuel injector lines. This was no big deal either as the SAAB CIS has adapters that screw into the top for the plastic lines and they screwed into the VW unit with no problem. Even the rubber intake tube that connects the CIS to the throttlebody fit perfectly.
The results? A SIGNIFICENT boost in low end and midrange torque. It feels like it has more oomph than my old 16V n/a car did. The only catch is that the car now idles at 1100 RPMs but I plan on adjusting that back down this afternoon.
I cant think of any reason why this wouldn't also help 8V turbo cars too, after all, less restriction in airflow is never a bad thing.
Total cost $30 for the used VW CIS unit.
Has anyone else ever tried this? Any thoughts?
