My 1991 900S, 160k mi. has had increasingly severe power steering troubles, beginning last winter when cold: would randomly "bite", being very hard to turn the wheel, then release a couple seconds later; no correlation between position of the steering wheel and where it would bite. I had the steering rack replaced based on advice I got from a foreign car repair shop (pretty good record with them).

The severe problem went away with the new rack, but a perhaps different problem has appeared. Mostly while cold as well, the steering wheel will be stiff (but doesn't bite) in the center position, say +/- 30 degrees, and at every 180 deg in either direction. I suspect the universal joint between the rack and column. Can anybody confirm this suspicion or shed other light on it? If it is the u/j, can this thing simply be lubed, or does the whole *%@# rack have to come back out to replace it? In case it's relevant: the pump has never been replaced, and there are no steering fluid leaks.
