Prior to 1987, the turbo is cooled by the same engine oil that lubricates the bearings. This can cause trouble, because oil flow stops when the engine stops, but the turbo (1) may still be spinning, and (2) may still be very hot. If it's still hot and the oil flow stops, the oil in the turbo can turn to coke. That's why it's a good idea to let the turbo cool down by letting the car idle for 30 seconds or a minute after hard driving. You don't need to do this all the time, but if you were driving hard, don't just shut the car off.

In 87, the turbo got a water jacket. Oil is still used for lubrication and cooling, but now there is a water jacket plumbed into the engine's coolant flow. This helps keep the peak heat of the turbo down, and limits the heat overshoot after the engine is shut down.

The waterjacketed turbo is a nice feature, but my '86 900T made it to 162K with a non-waterjacketed turbo with no turbo problems. (At 162K it hit ice on the highway and was totalled, but the turbo was working great right up until the bridge abuttment).
