Just before I read your suggestion I did pull the valve cover and found that the rubber pad was loose in the guides. I tapped the guides down a bit and the pad is now tight. The pad seems to be hard plastic should it be soft? Also the chain seemed to have a bit of slack and using a long screw driver I pressed against the tensioner bar and noticed that the tensioner piston would extend but would retract when I pushed on the top of the chain between the cams. Perhaps the tensioner is faulty? I havent put the valve cover back on yet but after I do this and start the car I will hear if I fixed anything.
