To add to what RS and burlyb are saying...
Bad shifting is rarely a sign of a failing transmission. Popping out of gear, sychro problems, and noises are generally signs. If you've just got a poor-shifting Saab, consider flushing the fluid from the tranny and replacing it with new stuff, and checking to make sure the linkage bushings (at the shift tower and the coupler) are in good shape - don't just assume you have a major problem! Unless of course you're talking about an automatic transmission (which I'm thinking you are now) in which case try a fluid flush and an adjustment first - then grit your teeth. If it still shifts, it may very well just be out of adjustment, or maybe you just need new motor mounts!
As for justifying the cost, remember that cars cost money. You're gonna spend $100-$300 (or more) a month for *any* car, period. Whether you choose to invest that money in a new car or an old car is simply a matter of preference. For me, what I spend on my cars (about $100/mo, on average) is far, far less than what it would cost for me to finance a comparable new car. Most of the time I'm putting gas & oil & brakes on, but as long as I remember that every year I may have to spend $1200 on something, I don't feel bad about an occassional transmission or an A/C system replacement or new shocks & springs. And those years I don't have a major failure, I spend the money on upgrades. Works out pretty well.
