Since I've been hearing a clunk when going over bumps, I figured it was time for a new lower balljoint. With the Ohio winter cooperating, today was a great day to tackle the job. Boy was I in for a rusty surprise. The main stud was so tight I almost popped a blood vessel trying to loosen it. I even had to double up the wrench to get it to turn an eigth turn at a time. Then there was the problem with the two other bolts being rusted to the joint, even air tools were meeting their match. I was even prepared to take the lower A-arm off if needed. Well, I lucked out and the bolts eventually came loose(no match for air tools after all). Took the lower joint out and it was tight as a new one. HMMM, that wasn't the problem after all. So I put a new one in anyway. Then I figured I might as well put the upper one in while I'm at it. This one came right loose with minimal effort and it seeed loose enough to be causing the noise.
Recap: An hour and a half for the lower and a half hour for the upper with fresh grease fittings installed. Shouldn't need to replace these in the cars lifetime. No more clunking noises either.
