Greetings, all.

Six weeks ago the motor and tranny were rebuilt on my beloved 87 SPG, The Stealthbomber. (Tranny had not failed; tranny rebuild and pinion upgrade were done because engine had to be pulled anyway and with >250k on tranny, it was inevitable soon enough.) Work was done by/through a well-respected Saab-only shop run by competent and honest people. But I have serious questions as to whether I should accept the work done on the tranny, and I need input on "reasonable expectations of quality" in rebuilt tranny before I talk to the shop. Help, please.

Shifting is much more difficult than before the rebuild. Going from neutral into first is difficult, and going from first to second is especially difficult. From neutral to first there are two "stops", and from first to second there are three "stops." Unless handled very precisely (hard pressure to left as shifting from first to second) I feel what I think are pieces banging together, not meshing. Downshifting into these gears, even with heel-toe and double-clutch, also is worse than before the rebuild.

Third, fourth and fifth seem to be much smoother.

My suspicion is that there is something misaligned in the first and second synchros, or the parts used simply don't go together well.

Can you give me info to use in discussing with repair shop?

What are likely causes? Is this adjustable? Does tranny have to be pulled again to remedy? Is this something that the more experienced on this board would accept as the inherent risk in having a transmission rebuilt? Or do I have a right to expect that the transmission will be fundamentally smooth?

All specific information welcomed. And no, I will not identify the shop: like I said, they're decent people: if there is a problem, and you can help me identify it, I believe they will stand behind their work. I simply want to be sure both they and I come out of this with what we each deserve. Thanks.
