4 blinks indicates knock sensor fault. The control computer goes into limp-home mode to protect the engine when that occurs. It probably retards the timing as far as it can to prevent knock (this isn't knock that you can hear unless you're set up for ultrasonic pitches). If the car doesn't have shielded spark plug wires like Bougicords (oem wires) or Magnecores, the knock sensor can pick up RF emissoins from the wires and the ignition computer sometimes interprets that as knock.
The first thing you should do is give it a complete tune-up: plugs, wires, distributor cap & rotor, and time it correctly. Then check all vacuum hoses for cracks and replace bad ones.
