metal locking tab that has to be bent before a socket can be put on the bolt head. Also to note, the lower bolt is a pain to remove if tight. You need a 6 point socket and breaker bar usually to remove. I say just remove the pads and knock the yoke back and forth and try to grease what you can, but you are right, grease usually attracts more dirt.
I still say remove the cable just in case it's binding even a little. You can always use the other side to hold the car in neutral, nut remember don't e-brake when you're driving or you might have a bad situation with only one attached.
