Increased load on the belts will also cause the main pulley to slip/squeal. Checking the pulley is simple (but has to be done under car). The pulley is constucted with an inner portion that attaches to the crank shaft, a rubber ring, and pulley rings. The rubber ring is sandwiched between the inner portion and the outer pulley rings. The rubber is to minimize vibration and is glued to the inner part and outer rings. Over time the glue breaks down allowing slippage.

To check, make a line with chalk, crayon, paint, etc. across the face of the pulley OR across all the pulleys including the a/c pulley. Be sure you have the pulleys marked as you will be checking them, NOT the belts. Start the engine a couple time, then check the line to look for slippage.

If you have A/C, you can check for slippage of the proximal 3 rings compared to the outer a/c ring. The outer a/c ring is bolted to the inner portion of the main pulley, so it cannot slip. The 3 rings of the main pulley (carrying the alt and ps belts) can slip if the rubber portion of the main pulley has broken down. If the main pulley is slipping, the line across the 3 rings of the main pulley will remain aligned and the line on the a/c pulley will show slippage.

If you check using the face of the pulley, look for slippage of the inner portion of the pulley compared to the outer rings.

If you find slippage, don't delay in replacing. Over time the outer ring portion will destroy the oil pump cover.
