I need advice asap

I'm out of school for a few weeks so I'm helping my neighbor with his '86 900t project. We replaced the turbo but the car still runs like crap. It's been sitting for a year or so. It would not start so I told him to run up and buy new plugs as a last resort. There's a strange mixture of black and blue smoke out the tailpipe. I understand that it takes awhile to burn the oil out of the exhaust, residue from the old turbo. BUT, I removed the brand-new plugs and they were soot black. This is after running for about 10-15 minutes. FInally, the car backfired and died. I'm thinking the fuel pressure regulator?? We tried unplugging the amm and running it but it ran just as bad. He also has the week off work so it's saab time every day. What else could cause the plugs to get very black so fast besides a bad fuel pressure regulator? I tested the NTC sensor and it read 1.1 kohms, which isn't bad. We're going to the junkyard tomorrow to get another regulator. yes, I'm still planning on getting that '85 spg for $500!
Thanks,
dave n
