Well since no one else has responded Ill tell you what I did. Soon after I bought my car, my harness actually did get melted into oblivion. I rewired everything, took forever. After I spliced and rewired everything, I had some slack so I just ran it along the side of the hump in the floor and not over top of it. I never replaced the heat shield and all is well. I had the carpet up yesterday and the wires are fine. There may be enough slack in factory configuration that you could slump it over the side of the hump. Also, you could find some kind of insulation (I dont know what type, Im sure a good hardware store would have something) to wrap the harness in. Of course all this may be more trouble than you were looking for but it would be cheaper than a new heatshield. If you are really strapped for cash.
