91 900T convertible, 5spd.....

I've heard it a few times now and it makes me cringe. It seems to sometimes happen after having driven stop-and-go for a while and the engine is a little hotter than usual (gauge is almost to 3/4 mark but not quite) if that helps at all.... it's almost like a grinding noise coming from the engine... pretty loud because I see people turning to find out where that awful noise is coming from. If I turn the car off, I can hear the grinding slowly go away, but it seems that the grinding/scraping noise is coming from something that is turning, revolving... you can hear/feel something revolving and eventualy stopping (along with the noise). If I wait a minute or so, start it back up, and the noise is gone. If I try to start immediately after turning off, the noise persists. Alternator? Water pump? I have no idea but I was hoping someone's heard this painful noise before.

Geez... is there anything more awkward than trying to describe an unknown noise? I didn't think so.....
