It wasn't the sides that was the problem... with the new a-pillar covers the sides matched up perfectly. It was the front contour, under the windshield. There was a 1/2" gap between the windshield and the leading edge of the dash, *and* it sat 1-2" above the windshield line. I tried wrenching it down with screws to no avail. Side by side, I cannot tell a physical difference, but clearly there is one 'cause the dash from the '81 dropped right it, nary a problem.
FWIW I did drop an '89 dash into an '85 about two years ago, swapping a-pillar covers in the process. Not a problem, everything fit fine. That's why I was so dismayed at this predicament.
I am very near the point of getting myself some aluminum and some vinyl and purpose-building a dash. I don't think I could come up with anything even remotely close to attractive or I'd be out in the garage already. If it wasn't for the blasted curvature of the windshield, I'd also consider adapting a dash from another car. I've always had dreams of doing this ... the 900 is ergonomically laid out but had I to do it, I think there are changes (some aesthetic, some functional) that I would make...
