I don't know what you mean by 'the stereo shorts out'. Please be more specific. Also, please mention what year and model (turbo, body style, etc.) you've got - it makes a difference.
The radio and the front cornering lights share the same fuse, and therefore if there is a problem when you hit the turn signal, the cornering lights can take out the stereo.
As to the dimly lit indicator, that's a classic sign of a bad ground at the rear light cluster. If the ground is poor, and it usually is in the 900, the current can find some pretty weird ways to complete the circuit. Check past posts, and look in the FAQ's, or on the Townsend site (WWW.townsendimports.com) under electrical for some fixes for the 900's rear taillight issue.
Also, check all the bulbs to make sure one or more aren't shorted out. Rarely happens, but it does happen.
Good luck!
