How do I pass new fuel lines through the fire wall?

I need to pull the new fuel line through the firewall and into the engine compartment. The problem is that it kind of snakes around in the firewall before it pops out in the engine compartment. Even when it comes out in the engine compartment, it hsa to pass through the drivers side suspension frame thing so there is a lot that it has to pass through.
I havent removed the fuel return line yet, so I'm thinking I could attach a wire or cable onto the end of it and pull it out, leaves a guide line to pull the new fuel line back through with.
Has anyone ever done this before? Maybe if I remove the dash board or kick pad?
Thanks for any suggestions.
Rob
