Homemade O2 sensor wires - why not?

Let's say a guy thinks he killed the wires between (above) the spliced-in generic O2 sensor he installed (twice) and where they connect under hood above wheel, passenger side.
Any reason he couldn't splice in replacement wires between the plugs and the O2 sensor? If so, anyone have recommendation as to what type/gauge wire to use?
Figure I'd try this before I spend $130 on OEM O2 sensor/wires.
Thanks,
SDBWORKS
