It can easily (well, almost easily) be done without removing the A/C compressor. Provided you have relatively thin arms, that it.
You need to go in from the passenger (right) side.
Get Locktite 518 to seal the gasket. It works really well on whatever imperfections there are in the sealing surfaces.
A long handled 3/8" ratchet with a swivel head is very helpful, too.
The procedure when I did it 16 months ago:
Drain the coolant - you've probably done this already.
1. Loosen the 4 bolts on the water pump pulley. (It's easier when they're tight.) I think they're 10-mm.
2. Loosen the locking nut on the alternator. Back the alternator off using the adjustment nut to loosen the belts. Slip the belts off the alternator pulley.
3. Back off the A/C idler to loosen the belt, then remove the idler.
4. Remove the 4 w/p pulley bolts and the pulley.
5. By feel, locate the w/p bolts and remove them.
6. Give the old w/p a rap with something heavy to break it free from its seal.
7. Clean the sealing surface on the w/p housing (still attached to the engine) as well as you can. Get all of the old gasket material off.
etc. etc.
The trick is being comfortable finding your way around the back of the engine by feel and not worrying about minor cuts on your left arm from wedging it between the head and the firewall.
It took me a liesurely 2 hours (including time to post a few Help! requests on the C900 board.
