Having read some of the previous posts regarding removal and replacement of the oxygen sensor, Monster's in particular, I was dreading this job. Yesterday turned out unseasonably warm and if you've read some my previous posts you'll remember I flunked my MD Emissions (high NOx) for the second time recently, so a new Lambda was on the docket. So I thought I'd try, just try mind you, to remove a few of the 6 bolts on the exhaust elbow joint coming off the turbo and see what would happen. (Hint-I’d just sprayed some PBX-Blaster on the elbow joint bolts, thinking I’d grease the skids a little before taking the car into a mechanic on Monday to do the whole job.)
Surprise, surprise, each one (3x 12mm on the down pipe collar, 3x 13mm on the elbow joint going into the turbo) come off easily enough so I just kept going, removed all six bolts, took off the elbow (along with the old oxygen sensor still attached) to the local service station and in about 5 minutes, using a vise and a big ol' 23mm open crescent wrench, the old sensor came off and the new (universal Bosch from Autozone-$40) went on and I was back in business. No twisted garden weasel handles or bloodied knuckles. Not even a discouraging word uttered!
Spliced in the old plug, she fired up and no check engine lights or billowing smoke. Too easy. The Saab deities must have looked kindly on me for being a good Saab steward. I think I got off too easy. Do I have payback coming to me? Will I make it thru MD emissions by 2/2/02? -Stay tuned.
